The Loyal Awang
I know many stories about my dogs' direct ancestors, but one has always particularly touched me. The story of Awang the First, or often called Old Awang. A story of mutual love and loyalty.
Old Awang was bred by Huang ZhuHua and is the son of AJin and GuanJun. Awang was the most promising puppy in his litter and actually his breeder wanted to keep him. Another puppy from the litter was sold to a friend's aunt in Shenzhen. Sadly, this puppy passed away and the woman cried bitterly at the loss. The friend couldn't see his aunt's pain and went back to the breeder and asked him to give him another puppy. Awang was the last puppy of the litter and his breeder was also touched by his aunt's pain so he gave her the puppy Awang.
The aunt lived a very simple life and did some farming for her own needs. Awang and she were inseparable from the start. He accompanied her everywhere and they had a very close and special bond. Awang had a very good life, good food and lots of love and affection.
But one day the aunt became very ill and could not leave the house. Awang stayed by her side the whole time. One day when she had to be hospitalized, Awang followed her to the hospital but was not allowed inside.
For days, Awang waited outside the hospital and tried to get inside several times to find her. He got kicked out every time.
One day he was lucky and found his way to her bed. He never left her side and stayed under her bed, refusing any food.
When she died, he didn't want to leave her, but eventually followed her nephew home.
At home he crept into his corner and never woke up again. He was 15 years old.
Although old Awang is no more, many Shar Pei friends in China know his story of loyalty and love. His special personality was already known during his lifetime. His only son was also named Awang in recognition.
